چکیده

We assess the impact of merger policy on entry and entrepreneurship. Facing uncertainty about its prospects and foreseeing that it may wish to quit should profitability prove poor, a rational entrant considers possible exit routes. Horizontal merger reduces competition subsequently, lowering welfare in the short run, but also provides a valuable exit route. By facilitating exit and thus raising the value of entry, more lenient merger policy may stimulate entry sufficiently that welfare is increased overall. We calculate the optimal merger policy in the form of a low, but positive, profitability threshold below which a merger is permitted despite its adverse impact on post-merger competition. This may be viewed as an extension of the “failing firm defence” to include ailing, low profitability firms as well as imminently failing ones. The implications of strategic firm behaviour for the optimal policy are examined, and merger policy is compared with an

Learning and Smooth Stopping

We propose a simple model of optimal stopping where the economic environment changes as a result of learning. A primary application of our framework is an optimal job search problem when the worker’s labour market opportunities are initially uncertain. We distinguish between two interpretations of the model. In the first, a worker learns about common market conditions, such as the number of pot...

ut+1 = u n + Z (ut − u) . The economy converges monotonically to a unique steady state with b = bn = 0 and u = un. For u0 ≤ un, ut = un ∀t > 0. Finally, ρ is decreasing in ω and β; if ω = 1, then, ρ = 0, implying immediate convergence to the steady state. ∗John Hassler: IIES and CEPR; e-mail: [email protected]. †Per Krusell: Princeton University, IIES, and CEPR; e-mail: pkrusell@princeton...

A multifaceted program causes lasting progress for the very poor: Evidence from six countries

We present results from six randomized control trials of an integrated approach to improve livelihoods amongst the very poor. The approach combines the transfer of a productive asset with consumption support, training and coaching plus savings encouragement and health education and/or services. Results from the implementation of the same basic program, adapted to a wide variety of geographic an...

Inequality , Market Power , and Product Diversity

We analyze a macroeconomic model of monopolistic competition in which consumers earn unequal incomes. When preferences are non-homothetic, the distribution of income affects equilibrium mark-ups and equilibrium product diversity. Safeguarding Specific Human Capital Investments

When a firm changes its unique mix of products, markets, and technologies, some of employees’ previously acquired human capital depreciates. As a result, the firm can credibly renegotiate down employees’ quasi rents, which it had promised them as a reward for their human capital investments. We show that linking employees’ pay to total firm value, a widely observed phenonemon in practice, can m...
